Summer, or what we had of it, is ending. Dimensions Festival is just around the corner and the Slugs are returning to the mixtape series… First up Joe Muggs takes the lead and drops this Slugrave Mixtape as well as a interview for Generation Bass

The ethos of Slugrave is about stopping, sitting back, letting go of the earnest need to be on top of things, and just getting your groove on. It’s about taking it easy. It’s also generally about not letting the tempo go over 115bpm, but that’s arbitrary really – far more importantly it’s about stopping yourself hurtling forward at the expense of all else. It’s about lazily leafing through your vinyl shelves / CD booklets / file folders and digging out things that you slept on, about casually thinking “ahhh I’d forgotten that one” or “oh this will go with that”. No grand concept, no over-arching aesthetic – you’ll hear echoes of the Balearic ethos, of cosmic disco, of the deeper side of Moombahton, of indie-dance, of all flavours of bass music, of 90s electronica, of neo-soul and nu-jazz – just vibes.

Ben & Lex Glade Festival 2012 Podcast

 

The best electronic music festival there is is this weekend and two of the festivals favourite DJs have put together an outstanding mix in preparation. Matt Anderson 'Shut Up and Dance!!!'

 


Its Thursday and that can only mean one thing... it's OMC Mix Day!

Stepping up to the decks this week we have Matt Anderson who brings us a sweet lil 30 min 'Shut Up and Dance' retrospective mix to bring back the OMC rave day memories.

Shut Up and Dance is probably my favourite label of time, and set out the blue print for much of the great drum and bass / jungle music that was to come out of the UK during the 90's. Hope you enjoy and if you don't know these artists, you need to check.

Matt started DJing on a mobile disco 25 years ago, so he well qualifies for a place on OMC! From there he moved to playing at legal and illegal raves at the start of the acid house era in his home county of Essex and then on to London. Matt has also played at some of the legendary nights and venues of the era such as Labyrinth, Limelight and The Rocket.

From rave and early hardcore he progressed to drum and bass, and enjoyed success as an artist on certificate 18 records, collaborating with Rupert Parkes (Photek) and Skanna. He also continued DJing at nights such as Logical Progression, Balance at Plastic People, as well as stints abroad in Iceland, Belarus, Italy and the USA.

Today, you can still catch Matt spinning around the West Country at The Angel in Exeter, all Hold It Down Events and wherever else gives the him the freedom to play the music he loves.

We came, We saw, We slowed it down.

We are one! What an amazing year, big gigs like Glastonbury, Big Chill, Cultural Vibes, and smaller mini sized Slugraves in Exeter and London. We have been busy on the remix front to (soon to be revealed) and have released a ‘mixtape’ every month, give your take.

The good news is we won’t be slowing anything down on the mixtape, gig or music front, in fact, that side of things will keep going at a most un sluggy pace.

We will be playing some excellent festivals in 2012 and will be letting you know as and when we have more details (*STOP PRESS* Glade Festival information now in).

We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us so far. Continuing APE Towers' mission into the land of 140 Jungle and all things bass music n breaksy we are very very proud to welcome back the mighty Spanish bassmeisters Lethalness to kick off 2012 in style!!

First up 'Jawbreaker' a rolling nasty dirty techy 140 jungle behemoth that harks back to the dark and gnarly days of early Virus & Prototype badboys... Tight, punchy drums and twisted distorted bass so badass that will slay a mofo in a minute!

'Rocky Dog' no less of a beast and is a full on bassfest in its own right. Leaning towards the dubstep end of the 140 market but still sat firmly in the land of uptempo breaks it's packed chockablock with heavy beats, tight synths from electro leads to dubstep wobbles and the odd classic break thrown in for good measure. This is the perfect party shakin partner to Jawbreaker!

Our first birthday approaches, and we will be celebrating with the first official Slugrave club night on Fri 24th February at City Arts & Music Project in London.

Joining Ben and Richie (The Slugrave Bosses) will be renowned journalist and A&R Joe Muggs, a regular contributor to the mixtape series.

The night will be live streamed online, and there will be free Slugrave button badges for those in attendance.
