Review : Blue Effect 'Stop' [Functional]

Just stumbled upon this sweet review...

The Vitals:

Label: Functional Records
Genre: Breaks/Dubstep
Number of Tracks: 2
Dunamis' Take:

Blue Effect members Dan Cahill and Phil Licinio bring to you another nice breaks track "Stop", along with a great remix from Ben & Lex.

"Stop" is a great track by Blue Effect. First, I'm really digging the swing of the synths, giving a nice Caribbean, Latin feel to the track. The dubstep rhythm keeps this song interesting. All the intriguing sounds and the bassline give it nice appeal, too. The only reason that I wouldn't give this track a 4 out of 5 is that I would like the tempo to be bit faster. By the time you get to near the five-minute mark, the track feels like it drags.

I like the Ben & Lex Mix out of the two. It takes all the dubstep and interesting points of the original track and packages it into a breaks/progressive breaks style. The additional edits add nice flare to the remix. Additionally, the remix leaves out some of the bass parts from the original track that some might not like. Great remix, guys.

Whatever your style, both tracks are good and should be put in your breaks collection. Be on the lookout for this release and more tracks this year from Blue Effect on Functional Records. Also, watch for tracks from Ben & Lex on their own label, Ape Records, this year.

Blue Effect - Stop [Ben & Lex Remix] - Review

Looks like the remix me and Lex have done for Blue Effects 'Stop' is out and about promo wise. Know I've tried to translate this via Yahoo!s bablefish but it made no sense... anyways I reckons its a good review... I hope haha ;)

Another Ape Review

Blimey the reviews are coming in thick and fast today. Heres on from Estation.Ru over in Russia.
Will White / Ben Lex - Wait A Minute / Get On It Remixes [APEM006]

Groove Diggerz.

Will White - "Wait A Minute" remix

Оригинальному треку "Get on it" от Ben & Lex присуще серьезное звучание и более глубокий басовый фон.

Not having a clue about the Russian language I can only presume its a good review, hopefully. If someone can do a decent translation it would be much appreciated.

Our fine friends at Wicked Style over in Italy have reviewed the new APE Music single, which is due out on Monday.
Ben & Lex/Will White - Get On It/Wait A Minute [Remixes]

DMC Update Review

Bit last one this one, but just got a copy of Vol 2 issue 225 of the DMC Update magazine and theres a review for 'My Pink Sock'
BEN & LEX 'MY PINK SOCK' (FUNCTIONAL)

Ben & Lex are regulars on the breaks scene, having had previous releases feature on Freq Nasty's Breakspoll mix and Annie Nightingale's Radio 1 show, and running the Beatz & Bobz club night. Existing fans won't be disappointed - "My Pink Sock" is a no-nonsense tearer with a grinding b-line and clean, sharp drums that penetrate the thickest of speaker meshes. Flipside remix comes from DJ Quest, turning it inside out and back in on itself with a slower tempo, heavier drums and stomping outer-space drones. Peaktime alert.

4 out of 5

Get In!! All the reviews and feedback for this tune have been excellent. I'm sure will be writing a new killer tune for Functional very soon.

APEM006 Review

Yay our new single on APE is getting some very good reviews. Not only has it been in DJ Mag, but its just been reviewed on the Nuskool Breaks website.

Ben & Lex - Get On It (Plaza De Funk Remix) / Will White - Wait a Minute (Groove Diggerz Remix) (Ape Recordings)

Blam.

Ben & Lex - Get on It (Plaza De Funk Remix)

Let me preface this by saying that I really like both Ben & Lex, and Plaza De Funk's stuff, even if I don't generally play it (Ben & Lex are sometimes too hard, and Plaza is sometimes too funky).

This tune has now changed that.

Awesome tribal goodness opens up into a chunky beat for a spell. The first build is the part that makes my cock hard the most tho. It consists of a fierce little acid line, funky wah-wah guitars, and this little emergency broadcast signal-esque tone that flows through the tune. When the beat kicks back in, it is like oldskool warehouse funky breaks city. Little rave blips follow this up, being littered and delayed across the main body, into this fuckin evil bassline that I cannot WAIT to play on a big system that dominates the tune until the big break, when you are left with the electro blips for a few bars until everything kicks back in with the acid and wah-wah guitars with a big fat ass explosion. there are so many different contrasts in this tune, but he makes it all seem like it was meant to be. This would have to be my favorite work of Marcello's to date, and something I cannot WAIT to play out.

For fans of: Plump DJs, Soul Of Man, Myagi.

Will White - Wait a Minute (Groove Diggerz Mix)

I don't believe this is the Groove Diggerz. They are like how I referenced Ben & Lex and plaza earlier. I really like their stuff, it just generally doesn't fit in with what I play. This tune tho, will get more play than Tall Paul's cock in 1997. This tune is just one big badass really versatile monster. Minimal break opens it up for a short time (I do wish this was longer), into some quick tribal drums for a second before dropping this bassline and beat combination that completely took me off guard. The shit just throbs and pounds. The addition of some lazer sounds and the same fuckin sample used from Lock and Load's 'Blow Ya Mind' (this totally sells it for me btw. Even I loved that tune ages ago, and I'm totally geeking out listening to this for it) build the tune further. The main chunk is I think is done really well with this bassline that totally contrasts the chill vibe the rest of the tune is putting off. The big break is like early progressive house (think the Golden Girls 'Kinetic') sounding, and then turns into this distorted guitars, and then drops back in early with a healthy dose of fuckin acid, and this evil fuckin bassline. This tune straight fucking rocks it fierce out for a few bars, and goes back into the chill, but pumpin vibe till the end.

For fans of: Kickflip, Brothers Bud, Klaus Hill.

Acid in both tunes. sold!

Great release gents. Double a sider for sures.

Awesome.

Release date for the single will be in a couple of week, just waiting for Lex to confirm this one.

While browsing DJ Mag in WHSmiths this morning on my way to work I was pleasantly surprised to find they have reviewed 2 of our tunes, 'My Pink Sock' on Functional and the new release from our Label APE Music.

Fingers crossed next month there will be a review of our remix on Control Breaks, which is doing nicely in the shops at the moment.
